The Lie You’re Telling Yourself About the Best Way to Grow Your Advice Business

Do you have a tendency to overcomplicate success? For instance, when you look at the achievements of someone you admire; the longer you look the more you start to believe their success is unattainable.

The aura created by their success makes it that much more difficult to see them as someone you could become. Hearing their rags to riches story excites you, inspires you, only for the common curse of self-doubt to erode any belief that you could emulate their success.

For many, this is the curse that stops great practitioners from growing great businesses. It’s the curse that prevents great advisers from realising their true value and from having the impact on the world they really could have.

This is what the curse looks like, as it relates to growing your business:

  1. Watch what successful others are doing from afar.
  2. Try to emulate what they’re doing – without stopping to ask the important why, what, how questions.
  3. When it doesn’t work, quickly give up so that no-one notices it isn’t working – almost as soon as starting.
  4. Remind yourself what you were doing was safer, less risky – go back to way you’ve always done it.

It happens to all of us, in all areas of our life, but, it isn’t until you hear about the failures, the mistakes, and the setbacks of those you look up to that you begin to think differently.

As a business coach once told me “the only thing standing between you and the kind of business you want is fear. Fear of putting yourself out there. Fear of failure.”

Only once you become aware of this, can you begin to make real progress towards your goals.

The hard truths I learnt

  • At first, you’re going to suck at it. We all suck when we’re starting out.
  • You’re instincts are going to tell you that you’re not good enough.
  • You’re going to tell yourself the competition is better than you are.
  • However, you need to expect all of that, and you need to do it anyway.

In all of the success stories, we rarely get to see the steps that it took to get there. We rarely get to hear the struggles that our predecessors went through before they reached their pinnacle.

But everyone struggles, and everyone has failures. It’s time to stop under-estimating yourself and over-estimating your competition.

Most of all it’s time to start ‘putting yourself out there’.

If you’re stuck on how to do this, here are some incredibly simple steps you can follow:

Build an online presence

What good is having the best business in your field if no one but your trusty referral partners know you exist?

This is kind of like the old saying “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you’ll feed him for a lifetime.” You need to be thinking of referrals as being the ‘fish you’re given’ and your online presence as being the opportunity to catch your own fish for the rest of your life.

Craft a sales message your audience will connect with

Your website is the perfect place to do this. No longer is a website just a digital business card. Your website is an opportunity to be selling to your target audience 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. With the right sales message it can become the hardest working business development manager you’ll never need to employ.

Promote yourself and your brand

Never before have you had a greater opportunity to reach as many of your ideal clients. Your website, blogging, social media and paid digital marketing are all opportunities to show the world what you have to offer; and to do so whilst your busy working on growing your business.

Follow the steps outlined above and become that great practitioner with the great business. The adviser who realises their true value. Finally have the impact on the world you know you can.
