…and how you can leverage their secret for maximum impact in your business
“What would this look like if it were easy?” It’s a question you will see me reference time and time again – the reason? The impact it can have when overcoming the big challenges facing us in business and in life. It’s a question you may have seen before if you’re a fan of the man behind it, Tim Ferriss. It also has a lot to do with the rise of one of the strangest professions of the modern era – the social media influencer.

Despite having a net worth reportedly more than $100M USD, Ferriss started out no different to most. He had a goal to be a success and to have an impact. Like you, Ferriss was also prone to being incredibly hard on himself when he wasn’t achieving what he wanted in life. Enter the aforementioned question that changed his approach, and his results almost overnight.
To peel back the veil and analyse the reason Ferriss has achieved such rapid success within a short time frame, there is one thing Ferriss is very clear on – he hasn’t done it alone. Whether it be leveraging the entrepreneur focused bloggers to ensure his first book, The 4 Hour Work Week, went viral and made the New York Times best seller list – tick, tick; or turning the burning, unanswered questions in his life into another New York Times best seller, Tribe of Mentors, this time leveraging the knowledge of 100+ of the world’s best business minds – people who were already trusted authorities in their field of work.
Boiling it all down, Ferriss’ approach is also the reason behind the rise of social media influencers, the ability to leverage trust.
When an influencer shares a product or service; be it teeth whitening gel, or the latest appetite suppressant cookies; with an audience who already knows them, likes them and trusts them – this has the immediate impact of breaking down the many barriers to a sale. The owner of the product is not telling the potential customer to trust their product. They are gaining the customer’s trust via positioning and recommendation from a real person who already has the trust of the customer they wish to serve.
Now you’re probably thinking – how is selling books and teeth whitening gel relevant to my business? And it’s a valid question. But let me assure you, I speak from first-hand experience when I say that regardless of the product or service, this is an approach that can deliver real results for any business.
Utilising the power of this exact approach we were recently able to successfully launch our first online course – The Lead Generating Masterclass for Financial Advisers. As a result of being featured on a webinar hosted by the country’s leading social network for financial advisers – XY Adviser – we had 25 advisers sign up for the course within 3 days. But for the positioning and recommendation provided on the webinar, we might still be hoping for our first sign-up. Thanks Clay!
And if you would like to utilise this in your own business, but the idea of being featured on a webinar gives you cold sweats, here is a far simpler yet highly effective strategy.
Get in contact (or ‘reach out’ to use influencer language!) with three clients or client referral sources who you have recently helped in some meaningful way. Ideally focus on clients or referrals sources who are active on, and have a following on social media, and ask them for a quick ‘shout out’. This might be as simple as asking them to post:
- A quick thank you, or
- A testimonial whereby they describe how you helped them or their client, and the kind of people who would benefit from using your services.
Be sure to ask them to tag you in the post, and once the post is live you can re-post for maximum reach and impact!
Applied consistently and effectively, the results that can flow because of being positioned and recommended by other real and trusted people are undeniable.
As a business owner it’s incredibly easy to be hard on yourself, or to feel like you have got to do it all on your own. Whenever you feel this way remember to ask yourself the most important question of all: “what would this look like if it were easy?”
